Al Stegman IBCA Hall of Fame Coach and Little 10 Conference coaching legend from Serena passed away on January 19th.

Al coached basketball at Harding Grade School for 15 years before taking over the head coaching job for the Huskers of Serena High School in 1971. Al coached the Serena boy’s teams until 1981. During that period, his teams won four Little Ten Conference Championships and three Little Ten Conference Tournament Championships. His 1981 team reached the Sectional Championship game after upsetting Tiskilwa, the sixth ranked team on the state. This would be the last game Al would coach as he retired at the end of that season. He continued to serve the basketball program as Secretary of the Little Ten Conference for many years and also took over the job of assigning officials for conference games.

Al was inducted into the IBCA Hall of Fame in 1986 and was the first inductee to the Serena High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

Visitation for Al Stegman will be Monday January 23rd in the Vintage Gym at Serena High School. Memorials may be directed to the family to establish a scholarship fund in Al’s name.
